  • CUSTOMER: OEM PUMP SHOP, Burnaby, BC
  • APPLICATION DATE: August 1989
  • PROBLEM: Erosion and a collapsed bearing had contributed to massive wear around diffuser bowl. Almost a ¼ inch of metal had been lost.
  • PRODUCTS:

  • BELZONA FACTS: Using Belzona® eliminated the need to scrap the component which would have resulted in a lengthy wait as part was not readily available. The service life of this pump was tracked for more than 6 years after completion of this application. It was finally scrapped in 1996. During this period no additional Belzona work was carried out on it.

  • APPLICATION DATE: August 1989
  • PROBLEM: Bi-metallic corrosion had eroded much of the metal vanes rendering pump ineffective.

  • BELZONA FACTS: Using Belzona® allowed pump shop to save pump that was not readily replaceable. The service life of this pump was tracked for more than 6 years after completion of this application. It was finally scrapped in 1996. During this period no additional Belzona work was carried out on it.

  • APPLICATION DATE: August 2000
  • PROBLEM: Continuous off-loading of various pulp mill chemicals had resulted in major concrete degradation over the course of a number of years.

  • BELZONA FACTS: Using Belzona® allowed the concrete to be rebuild and protected against chemical attack without having to jack hammer all the concrete out so that a new off loading pad could be cast. This reduced the amount of downtime.

  • CUSTOMER: PULP & PAPER OPERATION Port Alberni, BC
  • APPLICATION DATE: September 2000
  • PROBLEM: The shaft sleeve, which was held in place by a series of grub screws, had to be replaced on a regular basis. The contact area was only about 2 inches wide at each end.

  • BELZONA FACTS: By injecting Belzona® 1321 Ceramic S Metal into the voids the contact area was increased to 100%. This prevented the pulp stock from leaking into the sleeve as it had done on previous occasions and causing the break down. This mill has not had to redo this repair since it went into service 3 years back.

  • APPLICATION DATE: August 1999
  • PROBLEM: Because of the excessive corrosion chips would not slide evenly over the cone structure of the chip shaker causing it to jam and disrupt the flow.

  • BELZONA FACTS: The slippery nature of Belzona® 1341, which has a superior coefficient of friction than UHMW sheeting, ensured that there was little resistance for the chips as they slid down the cone.

  • BELZONA FACTS: The Belzona® acts as a sacrificial coating and prevents the metal from being worn away. Application was done in place without the need to dismantle the equipment saving many hours of downtime.

  • PROBLEM: Pulleys were originally lagged every year.

  • BELZONA FACTS: These pulleys drive the chip belt supply to the mill and were re-lagged every year on a scheduled shut down. This involved a considerable amount of time. The Belzona® SHM-12 application has run for 5 years without the need for further maintenance other than cleaning. As a result of the improved performance and service life, a 2nd supply line drive pulley was also coated with the Belzona system.

  • APPLICATION DATE: September 2002
  • PROBLEM: Because of constant impact and moisture penetration from above, corrosion had caused the underside of the concrete deck to spall.

  • BELZONA FACTS: Using Belzona® 4141 Magma Build allowed the underside to be rebuilt in a single application without the need for formers. The light weight Belzona® 4141 material allows masons to rebuild to a thickness of 3 inches on overhead surfaces.

  • PROBLEM: Original caulking material had failed creating an environmental seepage hazard.

  • PROBLEM: Fan housings would be eroded through from the continuous passage of abrasive particulate requiring them to be replaced on a regular basis.

  • BELZONA FACTS: An initial test on the original badly eroded housings proved the cost benefits to the customer. With the Belzona product acting as a sacrificial wear surface, minimal metal loss was recorded during a 12 month test period.

  • PROBLEM: The bearing surface of a paper machine main drive unit was badly damaged and starting to cause “gear lash” problems.

  • BELZONA FACTS: There is a long history at this facility using Belzona on both bearing fits and journals without any failures.

  • PROBLEM: The pump casing had become badly pitted in areas.

  • PROBLEM: There was a fit problem with gear causing excessive vibration.

  • BELZONA FACTS: Because of the complexities associated with the intended application the entire application procedure was pre-planned prior to the planned shutdown. As a result the application went smoothly. This included heating the large gear drive before shrink fitting it onto the newly rebuilt journal that also contained a keyway.

  • BELZONA FACTS: Rebuilding and protecting from further abrasion without having to dismantle resulted in saving a significant amount of downtime. This unit had suffered a major amount of metal loss when checked for thickness. Rebuilding with Belzona 1812 allowed unit to operate for another year before been replaced. When it was replaced in 2003 it was established that the housing had suffered no further metal loss. This result lead the mill to have the replacement units pre-coated prior to installation.   • APPLICATION DATE: August 2006
  • PROBLEM: Heavy traffic was wearing the steel deck of the dumpers, and the welded steel plates added to solve the problem constantly broke loose and created a hazard and downtime. Additionally, the steel deck became slippery during the long winter months and wet weather .
